Understanding the Legal Rules for Invoice Dates

Invoice Date

Normally, billing should occur once the work is completed. It is not legal to defer billing to the next month to save on GST/QST and/or taxes. It is also not legal to backdate an invoice so that the client can save taxes in their previous period.

In the event of an audit, the government must be able to prove that there was a deliberate modification of the invoice date.

If the issue is technical, it is possible to issue invoices in other months. For example, if you forgot to invoice for September, no problem. The same applies to issuing an invoice in November for work that will be done in November, but the client wants the invoice immediately for their budget or other reasons.

Note: If an invoice is issued for a previously recorded period, don’t forget to inform the accountant so they can adjust their accounting accordingly.
